What is Mebendazole ?

Mebendazole is a broad-spectrum deworming drug, which can completely kill the eggs of hookworm and whipworm and partially kill the eggs of ascaris. It has a strong affinity for the β-tubulin of the worm and can bind to it at very low concentrations. It can inhibit the polymerization of its microtubules by affecting the metabolism of sugars and related energy production of the worm, and cause the loss of the epidermis or intestinal cells of the worm. It can selectively and irreversibly inhibit the intake of glucose and other nutrients from the intestinal tract, and eventually lead to the death of the insect. It is suitable for the treatment of human and animal infections caused by whipworm, pinworm, hookworm, tapeworm, strongylus faecalis, roundworm and other single or multiple worms, but ineffective for hydatid disease.

Function And Application of Mebendazole

  Mebendazole is thought to work by selectively inhibiting the synthesis of microtubules in parasitic worms,
and by destroying extant cytoplasmic microtubes in their intestinal cells: thereby blocking the uptake of
glucose and other nutrients, resulting in the gradual immobilization and eventual death of the helminths. 

The drug is a highly effective broad spectrum antihelminitic indicated for the treatment of nematode
infestations, including round worm, whip worm, thread worm, and hook worm. It is poorly absorbed and
has no systemic effects.
