A spherical roller bearing is a rolling-element bearing that permits rotation with low friction, and permits angular misalignment.

Typically these bearings support a rotating shaft in the bore of the inner ring that may be misaligned in respect to the outer ring.

The misalignment is possible due to the spherical internal shape of the outer ring and spherical rollers.

Despite what their name may imply, spherical roller bearings are not truly spherical in shape.

The rolling elements of spherical roller bearings are mainly cylindrical in shape, but have a (barrel like) profile that makes them appear like cylinders that have been slightly over-inflated

1. Accommodate misalignment
Spherical roller bearings are self-aligning like self-aligning ball bearings, can compensate for the same bearing error.

2. High load carrying capacity
Spherical roller bearings are designed to accommodate both heavy radial loads and axial loads in both directions. Spherical roller bearings have two rows of rollers, mainly used to bear radial load, but also can withstand the axial load in either direction. This kind of bearing radial load capacity is high, especially suitable for heavy load or vibration load work,

3. Long service life
The symmetrical rollers self-adjust, providing optimal load distribution along the roller length and together with the special profile prevent stress peaks at the roller ends.  Roller bearings are used in all main shaft and auxiliary drive shaft applications to support pure radial load, and allow for axial shaft elongation due to temperature changes with no additional load effect on the bearing. So they have long service life.

4. Low friction
A spherical roller bearing is a rolling-element bearing that permits rotation with low friction, and permits angular misalignment. A floating guide ring guides unloaded rollers so that they enter the load zone in the optimal position.

5. Suitable clearance
Most use c4 clearance (Some C3)   C4 radial clearance allows thermal expansion for continuous operating temperatures up to 200 degrees C/392 degrees F
 
6. lubrication in place
Open design, circumferential groove and three lubrication holes in the outer ring allow for lubrication in place
