New laser light technology available to treat hair loss | WJAR

A new type of light laser cap is now available to treat hair loss -- it's similar to the Capillus Rx laser cap you wear at home.

\"It increases the blood flow to each of the follicles so it will stabilize progression of thinning in 90% of patients and it actually regrows hair 60% of the time, \"said Dr. Robert Leonard, founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates and the director of the Hair Health Institute. He now specializes in non-surgical options for patients and is totally on board with a cap that features more advanced light laser technology called the Auxo.

Leonard said it is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for safety and efficacy and features what's known as \"surface mount technology.\"

\"Surface mount technology as seen in the Auxo device is a wider beam and it goes more deeply into the skin to really very well reach that blood supply which needs to be stimulated to regrow hair,\" said Leonard.

\"It's a little warm, you feel the heat from the light but it's just a warm comfortable feeling,\" said Matt Zarrella, a long-time patient of Dr. Leonard's.

Leonard performed two hair transplants on Zarrella 20 years ago and it was effective. But, in the last year or so, he started noticing the non-transplanted hair started to fall out.

\"My hair's light, it was a very gradual process,\" said Zarrella.

So now he's giving Auxo a try. He wears the laser baseball-like cap every day for ten minutes. It's only been a few months so it's a little early to see any real results.

\"People will see after four months, less hair in the drain, less in the brush, less around and after 12 to 16 months is when we see regrowth of the hair follicles,\" explained Leonard who also said he often uses this new laser cap in addition to medications like Rogaine and Propecia for the best results.
