Thomas Edison filed a patent for his electric lightbulb in 1879. Somehow we’re still tinkering with it. The latest leap forward: Tala’s new LED take on Edison-style lightbulbs—ubiquitous in farm-to-table restaurants and Brooklyn lofts—which are energy-efficient but cast a warm, natural-looking light.

Founded by four students at the University of Edinburgh, Tala creates vintage-style lightbulbs in a range of old-school shapes (some with subtly tinted mouth-blown glass). In these bulbs, a string of superthin LED chips simulates the glowing filament of incandescents. But what really sets these apart are their less-concrete qualities.
