MURFREESBORO, TN - It's unfortunate but true, there have been quite a few automobile thefts reported in recent weeks in the Murfreesboro area. In the past 4 weeks, there have been at least 30 reports of vehicles being stolen in the city limits of Murfreesboro. Out of that number, at least 6 auto thefts were reported at apartment complexes. By far, the largest number of auto thefts were recorded at popular shopping destinations along Old Fort Parkway. Donfeng Electric Car
One group of auto owners appears to be getting hit harder than others. Evidently, thieves in several cases are exploiting a security flaw in the ignition system of Kia and Hyundai vehicles. This flaw allows them to start the car without a key, and they can do it in just a few seconds.
If you own a Kia or Hyundai, there are a few things you can do to protect your car from being stolen. First, make sure you have the latest software update installed. Hyundai and Kia have released software updates that address the security flaw, and these updates should be installed in all affected vehicles.
Second, you can install a steering wheel lock or other security device on your car. This will make it more difficult for thieves to steal your car, even if they have the key.
Finally, be aware of your surroundings when you park your car. If you can, park in a well-lit area with security cameras. And never leave your keys in your car, even if you're just running into a store for a few minutes.
Murfreesboro Police have frequently encouraged residents to Park Smart and to always lock your vehicle, remove or hide your valuables, and take your key or key fob with you when you leave your car, truck or SUV.
