GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids police release body camera video of an officer involved shooting that sent the suspect to the hospital.

The two officers involved are now on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, as Michigan State Police investigate the incident.

It's just after 8:30 Saturday morning, when a Grand Rapids police officer responds to a call of a troubled person in the Heritage Hill Neighborhood.

In an alley near Martha's Vineyard, the officer finds a 19-year-old man, telling police he's armed with a box cutter.

"Yeah, I'm going to take the box cutter away from you. Don't touch it. I'm going to take it. turn around and put your hands on the fence," the Grand Rapids Police Officer said.

The officer calls for back up, and minutes later, police body cam video shows the man charging directly at the officer with the box cutter, the officer yells out several warnings.

“You’re gonna get shot, stop, stop police!" the Grand Rapids Police Officer said.

The footage shows a second Grand Rapids police officer arriving to the scene.

Then suddenly the man pulls himself to his feet.

"Hey get back!" the Grand Rapids Police Officer said.

The suspect runs into a nearby garage. You hear him telling officers three times, he's armed with another knife.

"Get down on the ground," the Grand Rapids Police Officer said.

"I have a knife," the suspect said to the officer.

"He claims he has a knifer," the Grand Rapids Police Officer said to the other officer.

The suspect then charges at officers again, the first officer attempts to stop the man with a taser, but it doesn't work.

The man then charges at the second officer, and the officer shoots him.

"Get down, do it now," the Grand Rapids Police Officer said.

Police immediately give the suspect medical treatment at the scene, and he's taken to the hospital.

Police say the man is expected to survive.

Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom, held a media briefing Sunday, saying, “I am committed to transparency, and that includes releasing video of critical incidents as soon as possible, without impacting on-going investigations,”
