Sobeys vegetable supplier calls it quits | Supermarket News

A supplier of some vegetables to Sobeys stores has sold its operations, reports Canada news outlet Saltwire .

Sawler Gardens’ sale with a local farmer located about a mile from its land located on the outskirts of Berwick, Nova Scotia, Canada, will become final in April 2024.

Sawler Gardens grows carrots, onions, beets, and parsnips. Co-owner Mark Sawler said those in charge are approaching retirement age and it was time to sell. He said the farmer who will be acquiring the 200 hectares of land also has a grain and dairy operation and will most likely rent the Sawler facility.

“This unfortunate loss in Nova Scotia underscores the importance of grocery industry commitments to the local food movement and why it is so important that we continue to support farmers and producers to build more resilience in the Canadian supply chain,” Sobeys’ Spokesperson Sarah Dawson said in an email to Saltwire .

“Sobeys will continue to invest in, nurture, and support the local supplier community to meet ongoing customer demand for local brands on our shelves,” she added.
